Excellence in Teaching

Nina AbramzonNina Abramzon, Professor and Associate Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department, has an unwavering dedication to student retention, graduation, and overall student success. Since joining CPP in 2003, Dr. Abramzon has been commended by her peers and students for her effective pedagogy, course redesigns, and innovative leadership. She has been deeply involved in First Year Experience as faculty lead: she redesigned the learning outcomes, co-designed PolyX, and facilitated learning communities and institutes. Dr. Abramzon has mentored over 50 physics students, many of whom have engaged published their own research. She is a staunch advocate for women and underrepresented minorities in STEM, participating in national organizations and NSF-funded projects. Her teaching and mentorship make her an exceptional recipient for this award.

 

Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities

Simeng LiSimeng Li, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, has made outstanding research contributions to his field: he has published an impressive 34 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters, and has garnered 1,790 citations. He has co-authored two laboratory manuals and is working on two forthcoming textbooks. Dr. Li has created extensive open educational resources to enhance student learning. His innovative work in environmental engineering and water sustainability has led to breakthroughs in water treatment and atmospheric water harvesting, earning him international acclaim for sustainable solutions. Since joining CPP in 2019, Dr. Li has secured $1 million in research funding and mentored over 40 students. His commitment to scholarly and creative excellence makes him an outstanding recipient for this award. 

 
Excellence in Service

Berit GivensBerit Givens, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, has demonstrated exceptional service to both the university and broader community. Joining CPP in 2003, Dr. Givens rose to the role of department chair and led significant transitions, enhanced departmental processes and advocated for faculty needs particularly during semester conversion and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her dedication to equitable hiring practices and impactful service in university-wide roles like Chair for the University Council of Chairs exemplifies her leadership. Beyond academia, Dr. Givens has engaged in educational outreach at correctional facilities and local schools, demonstrating her passion for making a positive difference in the community. Her exemplary university service makes her an excellent recipient for this award.

 

 

The Provost's Awards recipients will be recognized at their College’s Commencement Ceremonies in May 2024. The Provost’s Awards Symposium is scheduled for October 9, 2025. Additional information will be sent as the Fall semester unfolds.
